About Katan Silks
Katan is pure twisted silk in both the warp and the weft — heavier, crisper and longer-lasting than most silks, and the base that the best Banarasi sarees are woven on.
Is Katan the same as Banarasi?
No, though they overlap. Katan describes how the fabric is made; Banarasi describes where, and the zari brocade woven into it. A Banarasi is usually woven on Katan, but a Katan saree can be a plain weave with a simple border and no brocade at all. This collection also has Kanchipuram-style and ikat designs woven on Katan. Banarasi vs Katan silk explains it properly, and Katan silk: the weave worth saving up for covers what to look for.
What does a Katan saree cost here?
From about ₹1,000 to ₹33,600. The more of the saree the zari brocade covers, the higher the price; the simpler woven-border pieces make excellent puja sarees.
When to wear one
Katan holds a crisp pleat all day, which is why it is the Ashtami saree, the wedding saree and the one for the family photograph. It is warmer than cotton or tussar, so keep it for the sitting days rather than the walking ones.
Looking after it
Dry clean for the first few wears. Fold in muslin, refold every six months, and keep it away from damp.
