About Kanjivaram Silk Sarees
A Kanjivaram is the heavy silk of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, known for its contrast border and a pallu woven as its own statement. It is the saree people keep for twenty years.
What makes a Kanjivaram different from a Banarasi?
Weight and structure. A Kanjivaram is woven from thick mulberry silk and stands away from the body; a Banarasi drapes closer and carries its decoration in the zari brocade. In the Kanchipuram tradition the border is often woven separately and interlocked with the body. The pieces here are Kanchipuram-style weaves, many on silk-katan, and each listing gives its own fabric, zari and blouse piece — compare there rather than assuming every piece is built the same way. Our guide Banarasi or Kanjivaram sets them side by side.
What does a Kanjivaram cost here?
From ₹13,200 to ₹39,340. The difference is mostly silk weight and the amount of zari in the border and pallu.
When to wear one
Weddings, the wedding reception if you are family, Ashtami morning, and any puja where you want to be remembered in the photographs. Temple borders and deep reds, greens and mustards are the traditional choices; see styling a Kanjivaram for Puja.
Looking after it
Always dry clean. Store folded in muslin with the zari side in, away from light, and refold every few months. Never hang a Kanjivaram — the weight pulls the weave.
