A Lehenga at Durga Puja: When It Works and When It Doesn't

The lehenga has quietly taken over Puja evenings, and half the time it is the wrong call. Not because it is too much — Puja can carry a great deal — but because a lehenga is built for a room with seating and a lehenga in a pandal queue is a garment fighting its surroundings.

When it works

Ashtami evening and the Dashami parties. Both are seated, indoor or semi-indoor, and photographed. That is exactly what a lehenga is for. A croptop lehenga in particular reads younger and more current than a saree in the same room, which is often the point.

The Puja party circuit. Kolkata's club and residential-complex evenings during Puja are, in practice, receptions. Dress for the reception.

When it does not

Morning anjali, pandal hopping, anything involving stairs or a crowd. A lehenga skirt in a moving crowd catches on everything and picks up whatever is on the floor. You will spend the evening holding it up with one hand.

Choosing one that suits the festival

  • Lighter skirt, less flare. A 6-panel or 8-panel skirt moves. A 24-panel wedding kali is a wedding kali.
  • Colour over crystal. Puja lighting is warm and uneven. Heavy stone work goes flat under it; strong colour and real zari do not.
  • A dupatta you can pin. One drape, pinned twice, and forget about it.

See lehengas, the lighter croptop lehengas, and YOUVE lehengas for the more contemporary cuts.

The alternative for the other four days

An Anarkali gives you the same sweep with none of the trouble, and a choli palazzo set gives you the lehenga silhouette in something you can actually walk in. Both are in the festive collection.

The six-day plan puts the lehenga where it belongs and dresses the other days more sensibly.
