Diwali 2026 and the Wedding Season: What to Buy, and When
Vijaya Dashami was yesterday. The pandals are coming down, the sarees are going back into their cotton wrappers, and most people will now buy nothing for three weeks. That is a mistake, and this is the plan for the six weeks that follow.
What is actually on the calendar
- Dhanteras — 6 November
- Chhoti Diwali and Kali Chaudas — 7 November
- Diwali and Lakshmi Puja — Sunday 8 November 2026
- Kali Puja — the same amavasya night, which is why Bengal keeps a different evening from the rest of the country on the same date
- Govardhan Puja — the day after Diwali
- Bhai Dooj and Bhai Phonta — the day after that, on the 10th or the 11th depending on when the tithi falls
And then the weddings. The season runs from mid-November through February, and the invitations for it arrive during Diwali week.
The three windows, and what each is for
Late October — the quiet fortnight. Nothing is urgent, which is exactly why it is the best time to buy. The tailors are free for the only time between now and February, so a blouse ordered in these two weeks comes back in days rather than in a fortnight of pleading. If there is a saree you meant to buy for the pujas and did not, this is when to buy it.
The first week of November — festive, but lighter. Diwali is an evening festival held around lamps and a lot of standing. It does not want the heaviest silk you own. Georgette and crepe, organza and tissue silk do the work here, and the festive collection is the broad edit.
Mid-November onward — the weddings. Different dressing entirely: heavier weight, longer evenings, and the question of whether you are the guest or something closer. Lehengas, the wedding collection and, for the bride, Riwayat.
What to spend
The honest answer is that a festive saree and a wedding saree are different budgets and should be bought as such. Under Rs. 5,000 covers Diwali comfortably. Rs. 15,000 to 20,000 is where the wedding-guest weight begins.
The men need less planning and get it anyway: one Nehru jacket over a kurta he already owns covers most of November. RANJH menswear.
